4.2L I6 makes max power @ 6,000 RPM(285) and max torque @ 4600 RPM(276ft/lbs)
4.8L V8 makes max power @ 5,600 RPM (295) and max torque @4800 RPM(305ft/lbs)
Those are the facts make what you want of them. Keep in mind that the 4.2L weighs less so the power to weight on these two engines is nearly Identical, and the 4.2L gets 1 MPG better overall milage, big deal.

Heres a carrot fact jack, does 6bangers weren't made 4 pullin nottin butt der own wieght. I would take dat 4.6 over dat 4.2 anyday. Besides they shouldn't put tow rig and gas milage in the same story. If U want a tow rig buy a 3/4 ton with at least a 6.0 or a diesel. I dought cheves gonna be puttin any 4.2s in any real towin rig. Thats why it is nottin but a granny car not a truck or a tow rig.

You guys would think that guys towing would not care about mileage but they do. In fact the guys who do it for a living really care. Every extra mile they get out of a gallon of gas is more money for them. The 4.2l is not a engine for a 3/4 ton, in fact either is the 5.4lV8 that ford uses in their gas 3/4 ton's. : )
For the record my truck is an 2001 2500 HD with 8.1L V8 with the 5 speed Allison auto in it. I don't know what it gets for mileage nor do I care, when I step on the gas it hauls azz and that is all that matters to me. The only phuck up I did was buy the reg cab, now two kids later we all can't ride in the truck.

Extendo cab is much better I had the same problem wit the regular cab. So I bought a Extended cab.Juz Sayin.
