I have a pay as ya go phone from Alltel. $.15 a minute and good all over da friggin place. Cept it's a pain in da ass ta use in some areas. They make ya dial the whole friggin number twice from some areas. I don't care though, cell phones annoy me anyway and other than snowmo season when I'am gone a lot, $50 dollars in minutes will last me fer 6 months. Wifey is on da $40 a month dealy with her busyness. 300 minutes a month keeps her covered. If ya get that add a phone fer $10 bucks deal ya havta ta go to the $60 a month plan and than add the $10 and all the friggin taxes on top of that. I don't suppose they use pagers anymore?? I had one a dem back in my workin days and that vibratin in da pocket was fun. Wifey used ta buzz me just ta give me a cheap thrill.

They got some kids phones that will only dial the #'s the parents program in it. So you can have your cell, ma's cell and home phone + 911.

Nothing wrong with gettin the youngins a phone...nice little piece of mind.
I'd just check out the add a line deal....shouldn't be much more than $15-$20 like MC said.
The Mp3 player/phone deals are pretty popular.

For da record i never had a cell phone as a kid and never had a quarter in my pocket to use a pay phone when i was your kids age i was'nt alowed more then two blocks away if dad called and i didnt answer back it was trouble.

A woman I worked with was sent down to Mexico for a few months to train her replacements. She got a Go Phone from AT&T, bought something that automatically doubles the minutes AND keeps them for a year. Most pay as you go plans are only good for 30 to 60 days. AND AT&T contracts with all the other cell towers to get you better service. Bro has Verizon, and had to use my cheap crappy ATT Motorola in Munising (right near the cell tower) because he didn't have a signal. Sprint/Nextel won't work once you cross the bridge. I don't think T Mobile works up there either.
LTCM, when I had Alltel, I couldn't get a signal worth a darn in Saginaw -- even up on that huge azz bridge that goes over the river -- get one fine with AT&T though. (Plus I get A 15% discount off my plan through work).
I think the go phones are around the same price as trac phones. And you can spend an extra $30 or $40 for the double your minutes card, then if he buys $10 it's worth 20 for the next year. Gotta agree with Ken on the text messaging thing. YOu don't want him turning out like M1M and sending those dualie pics to his friends to post all over the net!

I had 2 bros and 4 sisters growin up Ice........ain't know way in hell da ole man woulda bought any of us any dam cell phone even if they DID exist. When we got a long distance call at home you'd think the call was comin from da moon. Say what ya had ta say and get da hell off! Alltel works just fine for me Suz....... yer phone musta been junk! Alltel owns da U.P. towers, but they just joined Verizon anyway.
