Vintage Riding in International Falls, Minnesota
Vintage sleds are booming, and a group of enthusiasts from the website VintageSleds.com gathers once every winter in International Falls, Minnesota, to celebrate the old machines and the culture that goes with it.
Riding the Lower Peninsula
What began as a spur-of-the-moment ride turned out to be one of my best snowmobile trips last winter.

A Big Upper
Ironwood, Michigan, is a miraculous place.
Spring To Lake Tahoe
About 10 miles into our ride near Lake Tahoe, we stopped.
The sun’s rays warmed our faces as we gawked at the Sierra Nevada mountain tops and valleys south of the magnificent lake that is split between California and Nevada. With temperatures approaching 60 degrees, we stripped off some of our riding gear. The temperatures were quite a bit warmer than we expected, but spring riding the Lake Tahoe high country is anything but predictable.
Ghost Towns
South Dakota’s Black Hills are rich in
history and legends, thanks to its gold mining era that started some 125 years ago.
Like to a magnet, Black Hills settlers were drawn to the area in search of the world’s most precious metal. It brought fortunes and prosperity for some, but left many gold seekers in financial ruins.
Early miners settled hundreds of towns throughout the Black Hills wilderness. But when the gold mines all but dried up at the end of World War II, towns were abandoned and left to crumble back to the ground that conceived so many broken dreams.
Roseau And Bust
This is a story about an Arctic Cat that had no intentions of celebrating Polaris’ 50th anniversary kickoff in Roseau, Minnesota.
Spoilsport.
The sled did not appreciate the destination, nor the long trip there. And it certainly couldn’t see the bigger picture — the chance to set a world record.
Cottage Country Cruising
The flat, white ribbon stretched ahead through the hardwood forest as the sun struggled to shed its veil of low-hanging clouds. Unseasonable warmth made the snow surface soft and mealy, and cut into fuel economy a bit, but riding was comfortable and relaxing as we eased along the tree-lined trail. Traffic was light, and everyone we met was riding responsibly, using approved hand signals and staying on their side of the ten-foot wide snow path. Ontario is a conservative place, so this was no surprise by any means.
Keystone Kaptivation
The Hyner Mountain Snowmobile Club members hosted and guided us through a maze of forest-road trails.
Winter Games
Have you ever snowmobiled down a mountain using a shovel as a ski?
A Much-Needed Escape
Believe it or not, my job is tough.
Last February, I was weary from a busy winter running around the Snowbelt checking out new sleds from the manufacturers and covering snowmobile races for our sister magazine, Snow Week. Though that hardly sounds like anything a sledhead would call “work,” I’ll remind you, it’s a tough job. As soon as I returned home from each trip, I plopped down in front of my computer and hammered out a story — narrowly hitting my deadline.
