Black Hills, S.D., Snowmobile Trails Open Thursday

Black Hills snowmobile trailsSnowmobile trails in the South Dakota Black Hills will open tomorrow, according to a story from the Black Hills Pioneer newspaper in Spearfish, S.D.

Shannon Percy, who manages the 350-mile trail system, said the area has 12 to 18 inches of snow, but another foot would make conditions ideal.

Groomers will head out Thursday night and work under a limited schedule to pack the trails until the area receives more snow.

Snowmobilers are welcome to ride off-trail in the Black Hills forest, unless an area is posted closed. But Percy said backcountry snowmobiling is not yet recommended this season because stumps and rocks aren’t sufficiently covered by snow.
